When you live in a beautiful state like Colorado, it's hard to imagine traveling to Alaska just to see more mountains, tree, and wildlife. All we have to do is drive a few hours and partake of the scenery right in our own backyard.
However, when you take an Alaska cruise, you can sit on your balcony or on the deck of the ship with a drink in hand and watch magnificent mountains that come right up out of the ocean as you sail by. It's extremely peaceful and a sight like no other. And, of course, you have the wonderful food, the great entertainment and the amazing service that only a cruise line can provide.
It is exhilarating to get your binoculars out and see an eagle sitting on a chunk of glacier or stand in awe at a pod of whales coming up for air. Some of the cities are only accessible by float plane and it's quite interesting to see these take off and land. And, you can take excursions where you can take the float planes to remote areas.
The glaciers are amazing, those big chunks of ice that have no end and come right down to the ocean. Some of the glaciers have colors which they call “windex blue”. It is just the reflection of the light that comes through, but it is quite a spectacular sight. I remember once when when I saw a bald eagle sunning himself on one of those "windex blue" chunks of glacier. If you are really lucky you will be able to see parts of the glaciers break off and fall into the ocean.
The sheer beauty of the area rejuvenates your soul and opens your mind.
In Juneau you can do helicopter tours and actually land on the glacier, take a dog sled, do some whale watching, fly-fishing, kayaking, biking or go to a Salmon bake. If those don’t interest you there are about 30 other excursions.
In Ketchikan you have a few different options, such as rain forest adventures, raptor exhibitions, Lumberjack show, Totems, sport fishing, bear watching and many other choices.
In Skagway you can pan for gold, ride the White Pass Scenic Railway, do some rock climbing, retrace the local history, or just take it easy and do some shopping. If these don’t excite you there are plenty of other options.
In fact, there is great shopping in all of the Alaskan cities. You can get items that you just can't find anywhere else. And if you like salmon, make sure you get plenty of smoked salmon to take home.
These are just few of the many things there are to do in Alaska. If you like nature, beautiful scenery and unique excursions Alaska will not disappoint.

Why book early?
Why book so early? If you want a Northbound cruise and would like a balcony that faces the land, those will sell out almost a year in advance. The same goes for the Southbound cruises. Popular excursions will also sell out fast. The sooner you are booked, the sooner you will be able to book excursions. And if you are choosing to do the popular cruise/land combinations, those will also sell out. Especially during the popular July sailings. Plan early, book early for the best options.
